Lib Dem leader, Sir Vince Cable, announced yesterday the launch of the Liberal Democrats manifesto “Bollocks to Brexit”, ahead of the European Parliament election later this May.  Their anti-Brexit manifesto is the “blueprint for what the UK could achieve if Brexit was stopped” and outlines both their aims and hopes, including:

  • “Stop Brexit and instead focus on building a country where everyone has the opportunity to get on in life”
  • The UK exercising its global influence by working with the EU rather than alone
  • Freedom of movement within the EU
  • Working with the EU to achieve the goals of the Paris agreement

The Lib Dems have expressed their support for remaining in the UK, believing that “Britain is stronger as part of the European Union” and has also been critical of Theresa May and the “national humiliation” her Brexit has caused.

The name has been the perfect tool for gaining the Liberal Democrats more attention and attracting pro-remainers. It has been speculated that this “Bollocks to Brexit” message would be more effective than the methods of other remain groups such as Green and Change UK in gaining support.

However, the name has been described as both ‘crude’ and ‘crass’, but a “stop Brexit” alternative has been provided for those who find it a little too distasteful. The Guardian, however, expressed that “The colourful language has at least marked out the Lib Dems as a party with a bit of fight in them” and others have called it a “stroke of genius”.

The Liberal Democrats may see success in the European Parliament election amidst the favourable outcome in recent local election, but Sir Vince Cable expressed that he didn’t think the results would be “spectacular”. Nevertheless, Cable told Sky news “among the parties that are totally committed to Remain, we are the one that people should be trying to get behind.”

“We are unambiguous, we argue we should stop Brexit, we’ve argued for a people’s vote, we’re not apologetic about it.” – Sir Vince Cable
